Why Study a Foreign Language?”
Задачи: познавательные: расширение общего и лингвистического кругозора учащихся;
развивающие: развитие активности, умения работать в группе, развитие навыков
информационно-поисковой работы;
учебные: развитие лексических навыков говорения, чтения, письма,
воспитательные: воспитание уважительного отношения к иноязычной культуре, более
глубокое осознание своей культуры

ХОД УРОКА
- Организационный момент.
Teacher: “Good morning everybody! Glad to see you. I hope you are ready for the lesson and you
are in a good mood, aren’t you? If so, let’s begin.”
2. Введение в сюжет. (Слайды1, 2, 3)
Teacher:“Do you know the word “polyglot”?
Pupil: “Polyglot is a person who knows many foreign languages.
Teacher: “Right you are!Look at the screen and read some information about great polyglots.(Слайды 1,2)
How do you think what is our lesson about?”
Pupil: “May be it’s about learning foreign languages”
Teacher:“Yes, the topic of our lesson is “Why Study a Foreign Language?” Let’s read the epigraph of the lesson and translate it, (Слайд3)
please:“Those who know nothing of foreign languages, know nothing of their own” J. Goethe. Do you agree? At our lesson we
must discuss the problem of learning foreign languages and we are going to speak about the role of foreign languages in
people’s life.

Teacher: “Today our key word is “foreign”. Let’s recall some words from our topic beginning
with these letters”.
Pupils: F -to forecast, to found, founder, field, fluently
O - organization, opportunity, official, others
R - to rank, to recognize, to research, to remain, to receive, reputation,
E - to expand, to export, to explore, explorer, English, enormous
I - to include, to invent, inventor, invention, international, influence, institutions
G - to get, German, global
N - to name after, nation, nuclear, native
Teacher: “Good for you!”

Teacher:“Languages may be different. Now, make up some combinations with the word
“language”
Pupils: Native, foreign, official, international, widespread, modern, world,major,global, old –
language
5. Проверка домашнего задания.
Teacher: “Before discussing the problem of learning foreign languages let’s speak about the role
of the Russian language in the world (Ex. 4 p. 161). What is the role of the Russian
language?”
Pupil 1: “Russian is one of the most widespread languages in the world”
Pupil 2: “It ranks with English, Chinese, Hindi and Spanish as a major world language”
Pupil 3: “Moreover, Russian remains the unofficial lingua franca of the former Soviet republics”
Pupil 4: “It’s one of the six official languages in the UN”
Pupil 5: “Russian is taught as a foreign language in many countries”
6. Овладение основными видами речевой деятельности.(Слайд 6)
Teacher:“Students throughout the world study different foreign languages, each chooses the
language most important for his or her interests or needs. Listen to British children
talking about foreign languages they study and answer the questions: What languages
have they chosen to study? Are they happy with their choice?”
Ex. 1 p. 162 (учащиеся прослушивают и читают тексты, отвечают на вопросы)
Teacher:“As you have read, there may be different reasons for choosing a language to study.
What about you? What are the most important reasons for studying foreign
languages? Ex. 3) p. 163. (учащиеся высказывают свои точки зрения на проблему,
используя опоры упр.2) стр163)
Why do you study English? Ex. 4) p. 163. (учащиеся используют опоры данного
упражнения)
7.Творческая работа в группах(составление синквейнов)
Teacher:It’s time for creative work. I want you to divide into two groups and write cinquains:
1 group – “the Russian language”, 2 group – “the English language”.
Group 1: The Russian language
Native, beautiful
Is spoken by many people
We can’t do without it
Important
Group 2: The English language
Global, widespread
Easy to study, borrows, expands
Is used throughout the world
Lingua franca
8. Итоги урока. Домашнее задание.
Teacher:Let’s read the epigraph of our lesson again. Are you convinced of the necessity of
learning foreign languages? Why?
Pupil 1:It’s important to learn foreign languages to be well educated person.
Pupil 2: The more a man knows the more opportunities he has.
Pupil 3: Knowledge gives you a great power.
Teacher:How clever you are! Next lesson we’ll discuss how to learn a foreign language effectively.
