Then hate me when thou wilt; if ever, now,

Now, while the world is bent my deeds to cross,

Join with the spite of Fortune, make me bow,

And do not drop in for an after-loss.

Ah, do not, when my heart has scaped this sorrow,

Come in the rearward of a conquered woe;

Give not a windy night a rainy morrow,

To linger out a purposed overthrow.

If thow wilt leave me, do not leave me last,

When other petty griefs have done their spite,

But in the onset come: so shall I taste

At first the very worst of Fortune’s might;

And other strains of woe, which now seem woe,

Compared with loss of thee will not seem so…

The great poet and dramatist William Shakespeare is often called by people “Our National Bard”, “The Immortal Poet of Nature” and the “Great Unknown”. Scientists consider that Shakespeare was born on  April 23, 1564. Stratford –on-Avon is a small town in the centre of Great Britain. It is  famous as the place where William  was born.

Young Sh. studied at the Grammar School where he learned Latin, Greek and other subjects. At that time  there were no theatres  in England. Groups of actors travelled from  town to town to town and played in different places. Sometimes actors came to Stratford. Young William went to see their shows and liked them very much. He wanted to become an actor.  Sometimes he wrote little plays and staged them with their  friends.

Excuse me, young lady! I don’t know your name. You danced so gracefully! I have never seen such beauty till this night. You look like a tender flower!

Ann: Oh, no, sir. Please, don’t joke. I can’t talk to you.

William: Don’t be shy, my angel. What is your name?

Ann: My name is Ann, Anna Hathaway

William: Oh! Ann… Your name is so sweet, so lovely. And I’m  Will, William Shakespeare.

Ann: Shakespeare? I’ve heard that surname. Your father is a famous glove maker, isn’t he?

William: Yes, my lady, you are right. I hope my own name will someday  be as famous too.  And what about your family?

Ann: My parents are only farmers…

William: But my mother is a farmer’s daughter.

Ann: I’m sorry, but I must go. My father is very puritanical. He will not like if I return home late. Good-bye!

William: Good-bye, my rose, I’ll expect to meet you again.

William married Ann Hathaway in November 1582, and she came to live in Henley Street.  John Shakespeare, Williams father, was pleased, that his eldest  son got married, but William’s mother, I think, didn’t want him marry so young: Will was only eighteen. The first daughter, Susannah – was born the next year (меняется слайд «1583») And in  1585 (меняется слайд) the twains – Hamnet and Judith – were born………..

Boy:

Tired with all these, for restful death I cry;

As, to behold desert  a beggar born,

And needy  nothing trimmed in jollity,

And purest faith unhappily forsworn,

And gilded honour shamefully mispleased,

And maiden virtue rudely strumpeted,

And right perfection wrongfully disgraced,

And strenghby limping sway disabled,

And art made tongue – tied by authority,

And folly, doctor –like, controlling skill,

And simple truth miscalled simplicity,

And captive good attending  captain ill:

Tired with all these , from these would I be gone

Save that, to die, I leave my love alone.

Girl:

Life in Stratford-on-Avon was hard, and when William was 21 (меняется слайд, там 1587) he went to London. In London he joined a group of actors. The famous Globe Theatre was the centre of London’s theatrical life. Shakespeare played on its stage and wrote plays for this theatre. At the same time, Shakespeare was an actor, a poet and a writer of drama. He wrote 154 sonnets, two poems and 37 plays.

The first period of his creative work consists of comedies and histories (слайд 1590-1600). In this period Shakespeare  wrote such histories as “King Henry IV”, “King Henry V”, “King Richard II”, “King Richard III” and others. “Romeo and Juliet” is one of Shakespeare’s best plays. It is a tragedy, but it was written  in the first period of his creative work. This play is full of love, youth and humanism.

Там записано “Romeo and Juliet”.

Romeo: If I profane with my unworthiest hand

This holy shrine, the gentle fine is this:

My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand

To smooth that rought touch with a tender kiss.

Juliet:    Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much,

              Which mannerly devotion shows in this:

             For saints have hands that pilgrims do touch

              And palm to palm is holy palmer’s kiss.

Romeo: have not saints lips, and holy palmers too?

Juliet: Ah, pilgrim, lips that they must use in pray’r

Romeo: Oh. Then dear-saint, let lips do what hands do:

               They play; grant thou, lest faith turn to despair

Juliet: Saints do not move, though grant for prayers’ sake.

Romeo: Then move not while my prayer’s effect I take

               This from my lips, by yours, my sin is purg’d (he kisses her)

Juliet: Then have my lips the sin that they have took

Romeo: Sin from my lips? Oh, trespass sweetly urg’d! Give me my sin again (he kisses her)

Juliet: You kiss by the book

Nurse: Madam, your mother craves a word with you.

Romeo: What’s her mother?

Nurse: Marry, bachelor, her mother is the lady of the house. And a good lady, and a wise and virtuous. I nurs’d her daughter that you talk’d withal. I tell you, he that can lay hold of her. Shall have the chinks (money)

Romeo: Is she a Capulet? O dear account! My life is my foe’s debt.

Juliet: Come hither, nurse. What is youd gentleman?

Nurse: The son and heir of old Tiberio.

Juliet: What’s he that follows there, that would not dance?

Nurse: I know not.

Juliet: Go, ask his name, if he be married. My grave is like to be my wedding bed.

Nurse: His name is Pomeo, and a Montague. The only son of your great enemy.

Juliet: My only love, sprung from my only hate!

            To early seen  unknown, and known too late!

            Prodigious birth of love it is to me

            That I must love a loathed enemy.

Compare: All of Shakespeare’s famous tragedies appeared between 1600 and 1608. This was the second period of his literary work. This period began with the tragedy “Hamlet”, which was a great success. The following plays belong to the second period: “King Lear”, “Othello”, “Macbeth” (меняется слайд  1609-1611)

Shakespeare’s plays of the third period are called Romantic Dramas: “The tempest”, “The Winter’s Tale”, “Henry VIII”.

Enter Petruchio, Katharina and Hprtensio.

Pet: Come on, I’God’s name; once more toward our father’s. Good Lord, how bright and goodly shines the moon!

Kath: The moon! The sun: it isn’t moonlight now.

Pet: I say it is the moon that shines so bright.

Kath: I know it is the sun that shines so bright.

Pet: Now, by my mother’s son, and that’s myself,

        It shall be moon, or star, or what I list,

        Or ere I journey to your father’s house –

        Go on, and fetch our horses back again –

        Evermore crossed and crossed, nothing but crossed!

Hor: Say as he says, or we shall never go

Kath: Forward, I pray, since we have come so far,

         And be it moon, or sun, or what you please:

         And if you please to call it a rush-candle,

         Henceforth I Vow it shall be so for me.

Pet: I say it is the moon.

Kath: I know it is the moon.

Pet: Nay, then you lie:  it is the blessed sun.

Kath: Then, God be blessed, it is the blessed sun:

          But sun it is not, when you say it is not;

          And the moon changes even as your mind.

          What you will have  it named , even that it is:

          And so, it shall be so for Katharine.

Hor:  Petruchio, go thy ways; the field is won

Pet: But, soft! Company is coming here.

     Enter Vincentio, in a travelling dress.

Pet: (to Vincentio) Good-morrow, gentle mistress: where away?

         Tell me, sweet Kate, and tell me truly too,

         Hast thou beheld a fresher gentlewoman?

         Such war of white and red within her cheeks!

         What stars  do spangle heaven with such beauty,

         As those two eyes become that heavenly face?-

         Fair lovely maid, once more good-day to thee: -

         Sweet Kate, embrace her for her beauty’s sake.

Hor: He will make the man mad, to make a woman of him.

Kath: Young budding virgin, fair and fresh and sweet,

           Wither away; or where is thy abode?

           Happy the parents of so fair a child,

           Happier the man whom favourable stars

           Allot thee for his lovely bed-fellow!

Pet: Why, how now, Kate? I hope thou art not mad

        This is a man, old, wrinkled, faded, withered;

        And not a maiden, as thou sayst he is.

Kath: Pardon, old father, my mistaking eyes,

          That have been so bedazzled with the sun,

          That everything I took on seemeth green

          Now I perceive thou art a reverend father;

          Pardon, I pray thee, for my mad mistaking.

In 1612, Shakespare left London. He decided to live in Stradford. Since that time Shakespeare didn’t act anymore and since 1613  he no longer wrote plays. Nobody knows what Shakespeare did  during the last years of his life. William Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616 (меняется слайд) and he was buried in the church  in Stratfort.

Shakespeare: My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;

                         Coral is far more red than her lip’s red;

                         If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;

       If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head

       I have seen roses damask, red and white,

       But no such roses see I in her cheeks;

       And in some perfumes is there more delight

       Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks:

       I love to hear her speak, yet well I know

      That music hath a far more pleasing sound,

      I grant I never saw a goddess go;

      My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground

      And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare

As any she belied with false  compare.
