They began in 777 BC in Greece and took place every four years for nearly twelve centuries. They were for men only. These games were part of a festival held every fourth year in honor of God Zeus at the place called Olympia. The athletes competed in running, boxing, wrestling and horse racing. The best athletes from different cities of Greece came to take part in the competition. The games were so popular that people used to stop wars during the games.

8. Olympic Games host cities:
Nowadays, many cities compete to host the Olympic Games. It is a great honour to host the Games. The games have also become politically important. The International Olympic Committee is the organization that governs the games. It decides which sports and events are held at the games and the host city for the summer and winter games. The USA hosted Games 8 times. Great Britain – 3 times and Russia – only once. The 2014 Olympic Winter Games will take place in the Russian Federation. The next summer games will be held in Rio.

The pupils of our school took part in the march. We were near the Chernyshevskaya Metro Station and saw the Olympic flame. We were proud of our country and Russian athletes. It was great!
11. Sports in my life:
As for me I am not going in for sport. In my free time I sometimes go swimming. I also have lessons of PE at school. I prefer watching sport programs on TV. My favorite sports are football and hockey. My uncle and I are waiting for ice hockey matches. We believe that our team will win and become the Olympic Champion.
In my class only one pupil does sport professionally every day. All other pupils like watching TV programs. I asked my classmates about Olympic Games.

Lots of people consider sport to be the funniest way to spend free time. Some of them watch sport matches on TV, supporting their favorite team. Some of them go in for sport. It is useful for health and it is a good opportunity for people to get together and to make friends.
The Olympic idea means friendship, fraternity, and cooperation among people of the world. The Olympic Movement proves that real peace can be achieved through sport.
