Great Britainis a monarchy, but the Queen is not absolute but constitutional. Her powers are
limited by Parliament. The Prime Minister is usually the leader of the Party that has a majority

England is bigger than the other countries of Great Britain. Foreigners often call everyone in the UK “English”, but the Irish the Welsh and the Scots don’t like this. They are proud of their countries and they like being different. The Irish, the Welsh and the Scots are all Celts.

The weather of Great Britain
The geography of Britain can explain to us much about its weather. English people have such a lot of rain because they live on the Island. In England there may be several different kinds of the weather all in one day. A day may begin as a warm spring morning; an hour or so late black clouds may appear from nowhere bringing heavy rain. At midday it may become quite cold. And then, in the late afternoon the sky will clear, the sun will begin to a shine, and for an hour or two before darkness falls, it will be summer.
There is much rain and fog in England. October is usually the wettest month, July is the hottest and January is the coldest one.
The weather in Britain is, of course, a constant topic of conversation English people, men or women, are always ready to discuss it.
Traditions
In Britain traditions play a more important part in the life of the people than in other countries.
The English are very proud of their traditions and carefully keep them. When you come to England you’re struck at once by quite a number of customs.
The English like their past. Even now people live in small cottages, which date back as far as the 16th century. Just imagine that! The country is still a monarchy and people respect their queen
Elizabeth11.

English meals
An Englishman’s idea of a good breakfast is the following: cereal with milk, bacon and eggs or fish, hot buttered toast with jam or marmalade and a cup of coffee or strong tea with milk. English people drink a lot of tea. Some have tea for breakfast, tea in the middle of the morning, tea after dinner, tea in the middle of the afternoon, tea at tea-time and tea with supper. The English always drink tea out of cups or mugs, never out of glasses. At midday everything is stopped for lunch. Dinner is usually eaten at 7 p.m. It may be soup ( though the English don’t like it very much). And often there will be fish or meat, perhaps the traditional roast beef of old England, and a lot of vegetables. The next course will be a fruit pie or cheese with biscuits. Englishmen always eat bread with their soup. With meat and vegetables they never eat any bread.
The tourist industry
The key of the tourist industry in London is integrating the city’s strengths and history with the
new economy. No other city can compare with London in that. But a key question is how to
unite these elements physically. What makes this possible is London’s combination of tradition
with its status as the world’s most international city. That creates the city’s unique character and
attraction.
If London is to continue to develop its tourist industry, this requires an integrated approach in
policing, transport, culture and business. What makes London a great place for tourists is not only its traditions, but that it is a modern city.
Let’s look through the data on tourism in London.
About 26 million visitors come in London every year.
Fifty per cent of the visitors to the city are foreigners.
The tourist industry is worth 9.5 billion ( pounds ) a year.
The tourist industry supports 275,000 jobs.
Londonhas 300 galleries and museums.
There are more than 150 theatres in London, that is 60,000 theatre seats on any one night.
