Our next problem for today is the
DIFFICULTIES IN LEARNING ENGLISH
By the way, what are the most difficult aspects of English for you?
According to the questionnaire the most problematic topics are Idioms, Grammar, Pronunciation and Phrasal Verbs.
Let`s analyze these difficulties. Why is pronunciation so important?
I propose you to watch an extract from a popular TV series and hope you`ll get a clue.
So what can the wrongly pronounced word provoke?
Yes, misunderstanding. There are a lot of words in English which have similar sounds but different meaning, they are called homonyms. Look at these pairs, read carefully and translate them, please.
Another tricky question is idioms. What are they used for?
I want you to study some more idioms today, look at the screen and let`s read them.
So you have a chance to practice these idioms
Try to do the following test
Now check yourselves
And try to use these idioms in the following dialogues
Read them aloud
As for me, the most difficult aspect of English is Phrasal verbs. Do you know what verb has the greatest number of meanings? It is the verb GET. Just look at the screen, can you explain the meaning of these phrases?
Read them, please.
Now I want you to look at your pupils` sheets. Let`s revise the meanings of the phrasal verb ‘to get’
Choose the right postposition
Now work in pairs and try to match the phrases from these two columns.
Let`s check.
So, I hope now we can go back to our pictures, can you now explain the meaning of these phrases?
Try
So, you see that all these aspects are really difficult.
Last week I got a letter from my pen-friend John, he is a teacher of English too. He shared his strategies of learning English but some words are out of place, please arrange them the right way.
Who wants to try?
